OnAir Hubs are public websites where the most current, comprehensive, and trusted knowledge on a scientific topic is crowsourced and curated.  Member Hubs & Sites focus on whatever topics their owners want to present to their vistiors and contributors. Any onAir Member can ‘broadcast’ their posts to one or more Hubs from an onAir Hub, Member Hub, Member Site, or via their WordPress site using the onAir Broadcast plugin.

Onair Hubs and Member Hubs & Sites are Do-it-Yourself requiring no programming expertise to manage, curate, and author content. Post authors own their content and control the terms of use. Hubs also have built-in tools to assist Hubmasters in generating revenue from their Hubs.

OnAir and Member Hubs can facilitate collaboration among their participants, improve communications with all interested parties including the general public. advance the knowledge base for their fields of interest; and, gain increased visibility and recognition for their contributors as thought and practice leaders in their topics of interest.

Hub Contributors

Hub as core

Becoming a Member

To contribute to a Hub, one needs to first become an OnAir Member. It’s free and easy for anyone (or an organization) to become a member. As an onAir Member, you will be able to subscribe to email updates, comment on posts, follow your favorite Hubs, and review posts in any accessible onAir Hub you are interested in.

Becoming a member will also enable you to become a Hub author, Hub curator, and/or Hangout On Air participant in any Hub that grants you permission. In addition, you will also have the option to receive the free onAir Broadcast plugin for your WordPress site as well as be able to purchase your own Member Hub or Member Site.  All that is required is your first and last name, email address, and password. Your user name will be your first initial and last name.

Hubmasters

Hubmasters manage a Hub having the ability to organize the Hub into categories and sub-categories, approve Hub curators and authors, and establish the terms and conditions for contributions and use of a Hub.  Hubmasters can choose to have Advisors and Advisory Boards to assist them in managing a Hub.

Curators

Curators choose which posts are accepted and where to display them on the Hub as well as which posts to re-broadcast to other Hubs.

Authors

Hub posts can be created, edited, and broadcast by authors who have been given access to select posts in a Hub. Authors can also create and broadcast posts from their own Member sites. When logged in, authors will see a Control Bar that only shows what a member can do on a particular site and all the Hubs they are following and contributing to.

Commenters

onAir Members can comment on posts, and in the near future, rate the quality and timeliness of a post.

Hangouts On Air

Any post author can have one or more Hangout On Air connected to and archived within their post(s). An example of Science Hangouts On Air are these We the Geeks hangouts offered by the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.

Sponsors

Public agencies, universities, or neutral foundations can apply to sponsor onAir Hubs. Member Hubs, if they choose to, will be provided with tools to assist them with signing up sponsors for their Hubs.

Exhibitors

onAir is developing an “Expo” application that will provide Hubs with a segregated area for advertising. Similar to having a booth at a professional conference, advertisers can exhibit in the 24/7 Expo section and provide chat support for potential and existing customers. In onAir Hubs, we are particularly interested in exhibits that inform your target audience.

Posts and Categories

Post content

Content is created and edited within an onAir Post.  A post’s author(s) can easily create many different types of content beyond the the standard blog-like post including posts on upcoming events, profiles on people, groups, and organizations, and daily or weekly digests.  Various kinds of media such as videos, PDfs, and images can be embedded throughout a post. Each post has a home site where it is located.

Category Options

Every post has a primary category it is associated with. Posts can also be associated with many other categories in a site; therefore, they can displayed (and discovered) in multiple places within a site. Categories also serve as “organized” tags for better search results.

Broadcasting to Hubs

Current Network Limitations

  • Whatever you publish to a “free” network is owned by the network. Most of these networks have the rights to reuse your content in various ways.
  • Whatever you publish to a network is trapped within that network. To share the same content with another network requires rewriting and resending the same content and there is no way of earning money from your contributions.
  • It is very difficult to find the best, most comprehensive websites for a particular topic and to have an opportunity to build a reputation for yourself, your groups, and your organizations in these sites

Sharing Your Post

onAir Broadcasting addresses these network limitations in many ways.  Posts can be broadcast to multiple Hub sites. Authors can update a post in its home site and have it be automatically updated in whatever other Hubs it has been broadcast to.

Owners of WordPress sites can use the onAir Broadcast plugin to share posts on their WordPress sites with any Hub using the onAir KNS.

Viewing Hubs & Sites

There are multiple ways to discover and view content on an onAir website.

Slide shows

Slide shows of posts  can be easily created by site curators anywhere on a site. Slide shows can be ‘played’ like a video or accessed one slide/post at a time. If there more than 10 posts in a slide show, all their thumbnails can be viewed at one time.

Quick Links and Link Maps

Important posts within a site and on other sites can be found in the Quick Link icon (far right on the menu bar).  Some posts contain a PDF/graphic that show many links to posts within a site and externally.

Daily and Weekly Digests

All Hubs have built-in tools to provide daily and weekly digests of the most recent and best posts.  Members can also receive these digests  in daily or weekly email newsletter.

onAir Hubs

Where the most current, comprehensive, and trusted knowledge on a scientific topic is crowdsourced by all interested stakeholders and curated by experts in the topic.

Hubs can create their own content as well as aggregate content from Member Hubs & Sites and WordPress sites using the onAir Broadcast plugin.

In addition to featuring the latest research, Hub content will also include information about educational, job, and grant opportunities; available resources; upcoming events; and profiles on people and groups. . Each onAir Hub will strive to become the most trusted and comprehensive Go-To place to find the best practices, courses, products, projects, events, and services related to the topic. Profiles on all the key associations, research centers, government agencies, non-profits, and corporations can also be found.

onAir Hub Categories

All onAir Hubs have categories that relate specifically to the topic of the Hub as well as five common categories: Events, Media, People, Groups, and Expo.

Hubmasters and Associations

Hubmasters for onAir Hubs are normally chosen because of their affiliation with the leading professional associations related to a Hub’s topic.

fnAir public Hub sites aggregate and display broadcast content in whatever way the Hubs’s curator’s want. Each Hub is organized by its Hubmaster. The Hubmaster recruits Expert Advisors who set a Hub’s quality standards and Curators who implement the Advisors’ guidelines.

Some of the benefits to associations for overseeing an onAir Hub are:

> Facilitate communication and collaboration among all stakeholders;
> Enhance the visibility, reputation and professional opportunities of Hub participants;
> Enable authors and their organizations to maintain ownership of and control over their content; and
> Give increased credibility, exposure, and revenue to the associations that oversee them.

Model onAir Hubs

onAir Hubs under development include the top level  Neuroscience Hub and sub-Hubs like Brain Mapping (Basic Research Hub) and Insomnia (Conditions Hub).

Potential Revenue Sources

Associations who manage onAir Hubs can gain additional revenues through
  • Hub and Newsletter Sponsors
  • Expo revenue
  • Pay to view content
  • Online Events such as  workshops, conferences
  • Online Consulting
  • Online Courses
  • Amazon book and media affiliate program
Revenue is shared with onAir Networks which provides hosting and software tools for every onAir Hub as well as aggregation Hubs like neuroscience.onairnetworks.cc.

Member Hubs and Sites

Members can have their own Hubs. They can have completely control over the organization and content of their Hubs, who can contribute directly to the Hub, and who, if anyone, can broadcast posts to their Hub. Owners of Member Hubs can also customize the theme of their Hubs as well as install optional plugins to add new functionality. Members can create many different Hub sites such as ones focusing on their organization, a project, or a conference.

Member sites have similar control over the content of their site although they can not receive broadcasts.

An Example of a Member Hub is the BRAIN 2015 Hub. Graphic below shows the range of organizations contributing content to this Hub.
